Hi everyone!
I know it has been a long time since I've been on here to write, but I've been busy! Extremely busy! (This is always a good thing, hee-hee) Anyways, it just dawned on me that since my move, this upcoming 2013 wedding season will be my first full-wedding season in Maryland. Of course I will still travel and have weddings booked in Delaware and Virginia, but for the first time I will have an entire year of weddings in Maryland. How cool is that? Adjusting to my new home here in Germantown wasn't the easiest. But, I have learned a lot and met some great people along the way. I am proud to officially consider myself a Maryland Wedding Photographer. If you are interested in booking your wedding with me, please feel free to contact me at www.tarakphoto.com or (302) 270-7119.
Have a great week everyone!
Sincerely,
A MARYLAND Wedding Photographer :)

Photographing Fair Hill International 2012, Elkton Maryland
Hi everyone!!
Many times I am approached and asked what types of photography do I shoot the most. I say weddings and horse shows. Horse shows?!!?! I always get the hairy eyeball when I respond to that question. Probably because most people will agree that weddings and horse shows are two very different things and a strange combination. However, what you may or may not know is that photography isn't my only passion in life. I have been riding and competing horses since I was 6 years old. So naturally horse shows are something else I love to shoot.
A few weeks ago I had the privilege of shooting at Fair Hill International again for the 4th year in a row. This year I was shooting for PRO. This is a huge event and one of the biggest championships for the advanced level of eventing on the East coast. It is tons of fun and this year, bright sunshine in combination with gorgeous fall trees made for some awesome photos. Check them out below!

The Kid Cuteness Continues!! More Kid Photography for Tara K Photo
Hi everyone!
I am on a roll with kids and babies these days :) I had a blast photographing Sofia, a very active 2yr old, as she played in the park. Sometimes, when kids don't want to sit for formal photos, getting candids of them in a happy environment such as a park, are the best! Plus it's also fun for me, the photographer. Here are some shots from the photoshoot below:

Fall Photoshoot: Preston and Zayden
I know as photographers we all have our "specialties." Areas or subjects that we tend to like to shoot the most, or just end up shooting the most often. For me, it's weddings and horses/horse shows. I find myself always at one of the two. Every once in awhile I will have family portraits or senior portraits thrown in, but very rarely do I get to do kids or infants.
Earlier in the week I had the privilege of shooting Preston (1 1/2 mo.) and Zayden (10 mo.) for their fall pictures. It was so cold outside but they both were awesome! It couldn't have gone any smoother and I loved every minute of it. I think I am going to try and take more time out of my usual photography routine and shoot more kids. There's something to say about capturing the innocence of a child.
Enjoy!

Kelly & Alex: A Beautiful Fall Wedding in Maryland
Hello blog world!
As I had mentioned, I was shooting a fall wedding yesterday. Well, I wanted to let you know it was a HUGE success. Not only was the wedding and all the people in it beautiful, but the weather was perfect for shooting! It was on and off sunny but overall still very bright without those blinding sun rays. This is my favorite weather for taking outdoors photos because you still have a lot of natural light for your photos but you don't have to worry about people squinting, harsh sunlight shadows, or sun rays across faces.
The wedding started around 11am and was a beautiful ceremony with about 140 people. It was set on the quiet, serene setting of Wye Island in Queenstown, Maryland. Just lovely! Congrats again to the couple and thank you for having me as your photographer.

Fall Wedding Photography= My Favorite
Hi everyone!
I haven't posted in a little while partially due to the fact I've been so busy but also partially due to the fact that I LOVE fall weather and sitting in front of a computer is the last place I'd want to be :)
Weddings in the fall are the best! I am looking forward to my fall wedding this weekend and am eager to get started! It looks like the weather is supposed to be low 70's and partly cloudy which is actually my preference for shooting!
I want to share this great article from the New York Institute of Photography on shooting and capturing fall foliage:
http://www.nyip.com/ezine/outdoors/fallcolor.html
I will keep you updated and post some shots after the wedding. Wish me Luck!!!!

Wedding Albums...After the Big Day
Hi blog world!!
I often talk about the wedding day photography itself but I wanted to touch a little on the wedding photography "favors." After the wedding day you deliver wonderful, beautiful photos to the client. They pop the disc into their computer and view them and are pleased. They of course know the story of their wedding that your photos are telling, but what about people who missed it, or were too busy being good hosts? What next?
Wedding albums are important. I don't understand why all photographers don't include even a simple, basic wedding album in their package options. Sure, it's great to have a copyright-free disc of photos that you can look at on a computer, but people still like having that tangible album. Something to hold and look at away from a computer...something to share with friends and family, or take to co-workers. Wedding albums can come in all different shapes and sizes with custom photo covers or fancy leather-bound design. They are meant to tell the story of the wedding day. (I often think about the very beginnings of older Disney movies where there's always a magical-looking book in the start which opens to then start telling the story) As a photographer it is important to have a lot of input from your client in the design, choice of photos and layout for the album. Then, it's up to you to use your creativity to make the client something special. However, if you're not good with graphic design or can't seem to place the photos in a way that is pleasing, there are lots of websites to help out there!!
One of my personal favorite companies to use is Capri. Here is their link:
http://www.zookbinders.com/Capri/CapriPHP/
They offer many different options and help with layout and design if needed.
Also, for those photographers are a tight budget there are other great sites such as:
http://www.shutterfly.com/
http://www.ritzpix.com/
http://www.zookbinders.com/home
In the end, wedding albums are still important. They help to take those timeless images you captured and put them into something tangible so it can be passed down from generation or simply kept for those rainy days, (or days when the computer decides not to work properly... i.e. your hard drive reader dies)

Bridal Shows.. Are they Worth It?
As a wedding photographer, there are many different ways of advertising and getting your name out there. A few weeks back I talked a little about SEO and linking your website to other sites. That is one of many great ways but the most common way is probably the bridal show. Bridal shows are like trade shows for brides where brides can come and view all types of wedding vendors in person. They are a great way to come in contact with hundreds of potential brides in a short period of time. However, there is one drawback to this... they cost a lot of money!
Most bridal shows average anywhere from $500-$1,500 per table/booth. Extra fees are tacked on if you want a corner booth, or electricity hookup. Also you have to add in the costs of the handout materials and your table display itself. It can add up very quickly and you can be looking at a cost of $2,500 or more. BUT if you land that one large wedding, based on your pricing, it should pay for itself. So, what I want to know from all you other photographers out there... is it worth it?
I'm interested to hear your comments!!!
PS- I do realize there are smaller, more localized shows that cost less, however the attendance rates of these shows are often tiny compared to the larger shows.

Technology Rocks...!
I often try to keep up on the latest and greatest technology, and stumbled upon this article from The New York Times. For photographers out there that not only have fun with their SLR's but can also take some cool shots with their iphones, this is for you!!!

An App That Pays You, by Helping Sell Your Photos
By ROY FURCHGOTT
Published: July 19, 2012
Usually you have to pay for an app, but Foap is a free app that offers to pay you by putting your iPhone photos on sale online.
The offer is pretty straightforward. Take a picture with your phone, then send it to Foap. Its virtual stock photo agency puts the picture up for sale for $10. If it sells, the fee is split in half. Payments are made through PayPal.
The company said it accepted only photos it thought would sell. It said the approval process should take less than 24 hours, but in my test it took close to two days.
Foap said it did not want photos that used filters or effects (sorry, Instagrammers), or anything that made your pictures arty. (Yet if you browse the choices at foap.com, you will see plenty of both.)
You sell all rights when you send the photos. If you send in a picture of your grandmother and it shows up on a poster saying, ''Help Elderly Drug Addicts,'' tough luck. You have no recourse. ROY FURCHGOTT

Pinterest... a tool for photographers
Hi everyone!
For those of you who haven't caught on to the Pinterest craze yet I wanted to suggest it!! Yes, it's another social networking type site that takes up way too much of your time, BUT it can be a great tool for us photographers :) We all know that not every pose we do can be 100% original so it's great to see other photographers work and ideas so we can then build off of them.
On Pinterest you can get ideas on wedding poses, unique ways to shoot a bride, cool ways to show decorations, etc. It's pretty amazing actually. I would like to share a link to just one of the many "Weddings" boards on the site. Check it out and see how many creative photo ideas you can get from it!

A little on Marketing... SEO/links
For those of you who don't know, I am also a marketing consultant in my spare time, focusing on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) One of the important aspects for photographers like myself, is to get their site higher on the ranks of Google. It's even more challenging for photographers because it is such a broad market. Take a look at my business, there are thousands of wedding photographers in the Washington DC metro area, so it is essential to get my website recognized!!!
I found an interesting article by Carrie Swaills that I'd like to share. It covers the topic of hyper-linking or getting links to your website from other professionals pages. Enjoy!

5 WAYS FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS TO GET LINKS (MARKETING)
It sounds crazy, but the number one way to market for free is to get other websites to link back to your website. It’s all…. about the link backs my friends.
It does have to do a lot with SEO (search engine rank) in that every time someone links to you Google analyzes it and “scores” your website and the more people that link to your website from their websites the higher you will show up in searches for photography in your area. What does being higher in a search mean? Excuse my “SEO for dummies” explanation. It means that when people are searching for a photographer they see you first, and it’s free! It is, of course, hard work behind the scenes, but it’s worth it in the end.
Here are a few ways you can get some link backs of your own. Thanks for being so patient for this blog post. I was intending on putting it up last Thursday or Friday, but I was in Vail and out of town for a wedding so I just took a couple days off from the blogosphere.
1. Wedding Websites – if you’re a wedding photographer registering on websites like weddingwire.com, theknot.com, and all those other ones will usually allow you to put a link to your website. A lot of these wedding websites have a system set up where you can pay to be listed in their system, just stick with the free options. All you really want to get out of this is a link back to your website. There are literally hundreds of these types of websites, and some of them are owned by the same company. When you list on one you might find that listing on a few other sites you didn’t sign up for, but that’s okay. Google “wedding websites” and just start going at it!
2. Yellow Pages – Any websites like yellow pages allow you to have a business listing for free and will let you put your website up. There are several and these can be hugely helpful to bring your search engine rank higher.
3. Wedding Blogs – Having a wedding or photoshoot featured on a wedding blog is a great way to be linked to and show off your work. There are other websites and newborn blogs you could potentially submit a session to be published on.
4. Photography Websites – Guest blog for someone looking for writers and you’ll be linked to.
5. Connect with other Vendors – If you are a wedding photographer connecting with local wedding planners, wedding venues, florists, DJs, etc. is a great way to be linked to. Offering them the use of your photos in exchange to a link on their website is a great way to make friends in the business and get linked to. When you give wedding vendors the use of your photos they are usually incredibly grateful and will help refer clients to you too. If you do newborn or family photography you can connect with midwives, birthing centers and hospitals to provide them photos for their websites and get a link back in exchange.

20 Things You Wish You Knew About Photography Posing....
Hi!
For those of you who aren't professionals in the business, or even for those that are, it never hurts to be reminded of certain "tricks" when practicing our photography. A friend of mine sent me this link the other day and I love it... everything in the article is very true! Most of it I already practice but it never hurts for a refresher... so here it is:
http://photographyawesomesauce.com/20-things-i-wish-i-knew-about-photography-posing/
My favorite is the "never shoot below a person" trick. I have used this for years teasing my family and getting on the top set of stairs to take photos at Christmas. It's amazing that it really works!! So try it!
One other point I loved is the "let one pose become many." So true!! Instead of making your client move all around the place, try YOU moving as the photographer. Switching up angles is one of my favorite things to do. Here's one of my examples:

Things are back on track!
Hi blog world,
Well it's official. After almost a year transition I am back on track and ready to begin full-on marketing in my new area of Germantown, Maryland. Moving from a smaller area like Delaware to the DC Metro area has opened my eyes up to many new opportunities and I am very blessed for that. I am excited to gain new clients in this area and explore all the wedding venues! Wedding photographers here I come!
There many be a lot of photographers out there but I am determined to succeed and get my name out like I did in Delaware. Of course I won't forget DE and will still be traveling back for weddings on occasion.
Thank you to everyone who has followed me and supported me through my year of transition...stay tuned for more exciting things from Tara Katherine Photography!

The Final Countdown...
Hello everyone in blog world!!
So the final countdown has begun to my wedding season...I officially have 17 days until I shoot my first wedding of 2012. Where has the time gone? As much as I have enjoyed my three month hiatus, I am eagerly awaiting to get back behind the lens and start shooting. However, weddings can be VERY stressful for the bride/family as well as the photographer. Here are 5 tips I recommend:
1.) Stay calm at all times, no matter what.
2.) Always have a smile on your face and continually remind the bride that it's her day and she is beautiful.
3.) Come with a backup bag of goodies!
Hair pins, lint rollers, panty hose, tape, etc. Even if you don't have to use any of it, it helps the bride relax knowing it's there in case.
4.) Wear a watch. Stick to the schedule!
This is one of the hardest aspects of being a wedding photographer. Brides are always running around crazy and unaware of the time schedule they set. It's your job as a photographer to help them stay on that schedule. Because, if you don't, whether it's your fault or not, you will end up getting the blame for being late.
5.) Always act professional but feel free to lend a hand.
Sometimes, the bride may need you to hold something briefly, watch a toddler who's in the wedding, or just have someone not-related to the event to talk to... if this is the case, try and be as professional as you can but still lend a hand. I know it's not in the photographer's job description, BUT it puts you in that uppermost class of photographers and it will help the day go by very smoothly. As long as it's not interfering with your job to take photos, feel free to step outside your comfort zone and help. :)
Well that's some of my brief advice for shooting weddings. As the season for me progresses, I will occasionally stop in and let you all know how it's going! Until then...

Valentine's Day is Around the corner!
Happy Friday my blog friends!
Valentines day is around the corner! Only a few more days to go! Have you gotten something yet for your special someone? Or perhaps just for a family member that you want to show appreciation to? Valentine's Day isn't completely commercial by the way.... it began its roots with St. Valentine back in the day!
Anyways, if you are tired of the boring chocolates routine... or want to do something special this year, why not consider a photoshoot for your significant other? I have done couples shoots and although some people may find it strange, I think it's great! Just because you're legally "single" doesn't mean you don't have a love to celebrate. Before winter hit, I was able to do a photoshoot for a great couple that although they aren't married, they are definitely in love. See if you think these photos would show that!!
That's it for now!! Have a great day everyone.

One month to go....
Hi bloggers!
I'm sure you have noticed that I've been MIA lately. This is because, for many wedding photographers like myself, January-February is our down-time aka my "stay-cation." I decided not to go on any fancy vacation this year and just spend my free time relaxing, being with my husband and doing smaller photo jobs here and there on the side. Although the break has been nice, I am looking forward to my upcoming 2012 wedding season. My first few weddings begin in March and I can't wait!
As I look back on my 2011 wedding season, I wanted to say thank you to all the brides I had the pleasure working with. I witnessed some beautiful weddings last year and I was able to hold a small part of each one with me. For those of you who are curious, you can always visit my website: www.tarakphoto.com and check out some of the photographs from 2011. Each year I change the photos on my site to reflect the current year. So, get to looking because in a few months the old photos will be gone and fresh new photos from my 2012 brides will be here!!
Until next time...!

Each year I change the photos on my site to reflect the current year. So, get to looking because in a few months the old photos will be gone and fresh new photos from my 2012 brides will be here!!
Until next time...!
